ASCE Student Chapter Tops 2021 Pacific Southwest Conference

The UH Manoa ASCE Student Chapter participated in the virtual ASCE Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC) at UCLA on March 25 to 27, 2021. Thirty six students under the guidance of faculty advisors Dr. Francis and Dr. Babcock, competed in 8 technical events and 9 non-technical events. The team placed 4th in both the technical and non-technical events, ranking 6th overall in the conference out of 18 Universities (1,500 students total). The Timber Design team placed 3rd, the Transportation Design event team placed 5th, the Environmental event team tied for 6th place, the Steel Bridge placed first in ‘Aesthetics’ among three schools in the Pacific Southwest “Compete from Campus” competition.

The PSWC is the largest ASCE conference in the USA and the most competitive. The UHM Conference co-Chairs were Mallory Hataishi and Lyndsey Tagawa who worked tirelessly to ensure everything worked out well and everyone had a good time. The chapter was led in this past year by the following officers: President – Dylan Terukina; Vice-President – Nathan Mashiyama; Treasurer – Brooks Martinez; Recording Secretary – Chandelle Takahashi; and Corresponding Secretary – Ansen Nakasato.

The Student Chapter is very grateful to the 30 companies, the College of Engineering, ASCE Hawaii Section, and UH Manoa SAPFB who together made donations/grants totaling over $40,000 to help enable the team to prepare for and participate in the 2021 PSWC UCLA conference.
